What Is Blackjack?

Blackjack is a player-versus-dealer card game. Players are dealt cards and aim for a total closer to 21 than the dealer without exceeding it. The game combines fixed card values with player decisions, and the dealer follows set rules. Outcomes are a win, loss, push, or natural Blackjack depending on the final totals and applicable rules.

Playing a Round

Place your bet, receive two cards, and decide whether to hit, stand, double down, or split. The dealer then plays according to fixed rules.

Place your bet before cards are dealt.
Receive two cards face-up; the dealer receives two cards, one face-up.
Decide to hit (take another card), stand (keep your total), double down (double your wager for one more card), or split a matching pair.
The dealer draws until reaching the required total under fixed rules.
The hand closest to 21 without busting wins; equal totals push.

Basic Blackjack Strategy

Basic strategy is a mathematically derived set of decisions for hit, stand, double, and split based on your hand and the dealer's up-card. Strategy charts help players evaluate options, but they do not guarantee wins and cannot overcome the house edge or table rules.
